R100 rural deployment
Connecting rural premises across Scotland
The Scottish Government is enabling access to faster broadband to some of the most challenging locations in Scotland through the Reaching 100% (R100) programme.
Scotland has some of the most challenging terrain in which to deploy digital infrastructure in Europe. As the R100 programme continues to roll-out to properties across the country we take a look at some of the most rural homes and businesses that have been connected so far through the R100 contracts and R100 Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS):
- Elphin, Highland
- Galloway Activity Centre and Loch Ken Eco Bothies, Dumfries & Galloway
- Thornhill, Dumfries & Galloway
- Drimnin, Highland
- Ardentallen, Argyll & Bute.
As well as John and his partner now being able to access multiple devices at the same time thanks to their R100 SBVS superfast broadband connection, they have also benefitted from reduced commuting by being able to work from home.
Galloway Activity Centre and Loch Ken Eco Bothies, Dumfries & Galloway
The Loch Ken Eco Bothies and Galloway Activity Centre is on the edge of the Dumfries Dark Sky Park. In this video we hear from Richard and his supplier Mark from Fibairo on how business has positively changed since they used the R100 SBVS to access superfast broadband.
Thornhill, Dumfries & Galloway
Find out more about the scale of the work required in this video where over 130km of cabling was used by delivery partner, Openreach, to build this R100 contract connection for a cluster of properties in rural Dumfries & Galloway.
The Alan B Hayman art gallery and studio in rural Drimnin sits on the north-east shore of the Sound of Mull. Find out how Alan was able to expand and better engage his customer base with improved connectivity through R100 SBVS.
Ardentallen, Argyll and Bute
Pamela from Ardentallen, Argyll & Bute lives six miles from Oban and now has a full fibre connection through the R100 contracts. Pamela can now video call family, learn new hobbies and stream TV programmes.
The Scottish Government’s R100 programme ensures that every home and business in Scotland can access superfast broadband - speeds of at least 30 Megabits per second (Mbps).
R100 is delivered through three stands of activity:
- R100 contracts, covering the North, Central and South
- R100 Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme
- Continued commercial coverage.
