The World, and Scotland within it, has changed dramatically since the first DSSB enabled cabinet went live in April of 2014 and I am proud that the £463 million DSSB programme has achieved and gone on to exceed its aim of delivering 95% fibre broadband coverage for Scotland.

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of ‘In the Loop’. As the Scottish Government’s Connectivity Minister, I am delighted to announce real progress in delivering our £600 million Reaching 100 % (R100) programme, with the award of contracts in the South and Central lot areas to BT. The R100 programme will ensure that all premises across Scotland can access superfast speeds by 2021.

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of ‘In the Loop’.  The past few months have seen the DSSB programme reach a number of milestones. Over 940,000 homes and businesses can now receive fibre broadband thanks to the programme and over 5000 cabinets across Scotland are now in place, connecting more rural towns and villages to the fibre network.

The Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband (DSSB) programme met its aim of providing fibre broadband access to 95% of premises across Scotland in December 2017. The DSSB programme was never funded or expected to be able to reach all Scottish premises where there was market failure.

The summer holidays are almost upon us and hopefully most of us will be able to enjoy a few days break. Engineers will still be out deploying fibre for DSSB though - and fibre will continue to be deployed into 2020 under the DSSB programme.

Fibre broadband continues to be rolled out across the country, with Linlithgow, Lochee and Mid Calder amongst the latest to benefit from faster broadband in the last few weeks. And as Christmas approaches, our Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband engineers are certainly not slowing down! The team from Openreach are ready to deal with snow, ice, wind or rain to ensure that the programme remains on schedule.

New exchanges are being enabled for fibre broadband every week, opening new opportunities for thousands more homes and businesses. This year we will see the arrival of fibre broadband at many of the smallest exchanges in Scotland, previously served by ‘exchange only’ lines.

The early part of 2016 has seen us reaching a significant milestone – 500,000 homes and businesses in Scotland can now get fibre broadband. Over the last two years, Openreach engineers have laid over 5000 km of fibre cable – enough to stretch all the way from Glasgow to New York. We have just announced that premises in 28 further exchanges around Scotland will soon be enabled for fibre broadband, all the way from Sauchen, Schivas and Wartle in Aberdeenshire to Gordon, Grantshouse and Drochil Castle in the Scottish Borders.
